Benchmarks

Language Proficiency Benchmarks for English Language Learners with Limited Formal Schooling have been developed to support teachers to set learning goals, determine appropriate programming and report progress. The LFS Benchmarks align with the conceptual framework of the Alberta K-12 ESL Proficiency Benchmarks with learning indicators for the strands of  listening, speaking, reading and writing based on four communicative competencies: discourse, linguistic (vocabulary/grammar), strategic and socio-linguistic. The LFS Benchmarks identify in more detail, early foundational skills that are precursors to the “Beginning” indicators of Levels 1 and 2 of the Alberta K-12 ESL Proficiency Benchmarks.
